The Greater Waterbury community gathered together on Sunday, April 2, 2017 to honor Deputy Chief Christopher D. Corbett '93 of the Waterbury Police Department (WPD) at the 2nd Annual Chris Corbett 5K. The run was hosted at Holy Cross High School, Chris's alma mater. Several local private schools, friends and community members turned out to remember a truly wonderful man.
"On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Christopher D. Corbett Memorial Fund, I would like to thank you all for coming out," said Detective Peter Morgan #522 of the Waterbury Police Department, Computer Crimes Unit, in his opening remarks. "I just want to thank Holy Cross and President Peggy Leger for the use of their beautiful campus and facilities."
Crusaders came out in droves to run, sponsor or volunteer at the event including alumni, students, prospective students, parents and faculty. Sam Henderlite '20 emerged as one of the top winners, winning 6th in the overall race and 2nd in males, age 15-19. Several others ranked in the top three in their age categories including: McKenna Ellsworth '19 (placed 2nd in females, ages 15-19), Hannah Brown '19 (placed 3rd in females, ages 15-19),Christopher Christiano '20 (placed 1st in males, age 14 & under), Matthew Pang '20 (placed 2nd in males, 14 & under), Nicole Ragauskas '05 (placed 1st in law enforcement and 2nd in females, age 20-29), Kathleen Scanlon Ferrucci '99 (placed 2nd in females, ages 30-39) and parents, Melissa Erdtmann (placed 3rd in females, age 40-49), Tom Brayton (placed 1st in males, ages 50-59) and Nancy Kinsella (placed 3rd in females, ages 50-59). This is not just a one week preparation. This preparation has been going on for the whole year. I'm really proud of the way these guys are remembering Chris and his commitment to the city of Waterbury and to the community of Catholic education."
All proceeds from the race benefited the Christopher D. Corbett Memorial Fund, Inc. According to the official website, "The Christopher D. Corbett Memorial Fund, Inc. honors the memory of WPD Deputy Chief Christopher Corbett by continuing to foster the education of the Greater Waterbury parochial school student. The memorial fund provides scholarships to children attending Greater Waterbury parochial schools, and Greater Waterbury parochial schools graduating high school seniors pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice or a related field."
Chris, a member of the WPD since 1997, served as a sergeant (2004), a lieutenant (2006) and a captain (2010). He was a commander of the detective bureau and attended the FBI National Academy. A Waterbury native, he received his bachelor's from the College of the Holy Cross and his master's in criminal justice from Boston University.
